More Than Volunteer Hours

HORSEPOWER isn’t just a place for riders and horses. It’s also a place where high school students can learn, contribute, and become an important part of our volunteer team. I’d like to think I’m one of the first friends they make when they arrive.

From my favorite spot in the barn aisle, I get to watch them learn, grow, and become part of the HORSEPOWER family.

Our student volunteers fill many different roles. Some spend their time mucking stalls, filling hay nets, and helping keep the barn running smoothly. Others serve as sidewalkers, horse leaders, or support lessons in different ways. Every role matters, and every volunteer is part of the team that makes HORSEPOWER possible.

What impresses me most isn’t the job they’re doing, it’s the way they approach it. They show up. They work hard. They ask questions. They’re willing to learn something new, and they understand that every task, no matter how small, contributes to the success of our riders.

One of the things I notice is how naturally HORSEPOWER brings people together. Our student volunteers work alongside people of different ages, backgrounds, abilities, and experiences, and everyone has something to contribute. It’s a pretty special thing to watch.

It doesn’t take long before those new volunteers become familiar faces around the barn. They’re the smiling faces greeting riders, lending a hand wherever it’s needed, encouraging one another, and making HORSEPOWER a warmer, stronger community. And from where I spend most of my day, that’s one of the very best things to see.
