Meet PATH Intl.: The People Who Keep Our People Safe

You’ve probably heard the instructors mention “PATH” – sometimes when reviewing lesson plans, sometimes when checking that every helmet fits just right. Who are these mysterious humans behind the rules? I’ve listened in from under the ramp (best acoustics in the arena), and here’s the scoop.

PATH stands for the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International. It’s the organization that sets the standards for safety, professionalism, and excellence in equine-assisted services. HORSEPOWER is a PATH Premier Accredited Center — which means we meet or exceed hundreds of standards that keep everyone safe: horses, riders, volunteers, and instructors alike.

Our instructors are certified through PATH, which means they’ve completed extensive coursework, supervised teaching hours, written exams, and hands-on evaluations in adaptive riding, anatomy, psychology, and horse care. They also complete continuing education to maintain certification. PATH’s standards — like checking tack before every class — aren’t about formality. They’re about safety, consistency, and trust.

When an instructor gives direction, follow it exactly — not because they’re bossy, but because they’re trained to keep everyone safe. Leaders, keep your horse connected and calm; sidewalkers, stay close to your rider and maintain that safety hold. And remember: when we all do our part, riders can relax and focus on progress.

PATH might sound like paperwork, but really, it’s peace of mind — and this cat approves of anything that keeps my herd safe.

Until next time – that’s the view from the hay cart.

About Milo

I’m Milo – HorsePOWER’s tuxedo-clad barn cat, chief snack negotiator, gift from the universe, and part-time philosopher. I keep an eye on the horses, the humans, and the hay cart. When I’m not supervising classes, I’m busy explaining barn life from a feline point of view.

The purr-pose of my blog? To help my favorite humans – you, the volunteers – understand why we do things the way we do, how our horses think, and what keeps everyone safe, happy, and learning together. Around here, every hoofbeat tells a story – and I’ve got lots to share.

That’s my purr-spective. Now, if you’ll excuse me, duty calls. There’s always another story hiding in the hay.
