Which Reins Are You?

Here at HorsePOWER, very few things are “one size fits all.”

This includes reins.

Now, from a feline perspective, reins do look very much like something that would be entertaining to pounce on and drag triumphantly across the barn aisle. Unfortunately, humans rarely appreciate this contribution. Reins are actually very important tools that help different riders succeed in different ways.

Some riders use traditional braided leather reins. Some use soft rope reins that feel easier in the hands. Some reins have colored markers or beads so instructors can say things like, “Move your hands to the green,” helping riders find the correct position and maintain better contact with the horse.

Some reins have tape markings. Some have tennis balls attached to make gripping easier. Others have handles — a little like a waterski rope — that provide additional support while also helping riders steer more independently and confidently.

And one of the most fun parts? Riders often get to choose the reins they like best.

But the important thing is this:

None of those reins is less or more than the others.

They are tools designed to help riders communicate, succeed, and grow.

At HorsePOWER, adaptive equipment is not about limitation. It is about access.

That is one of the wonderful things about therapeutic riding: progress does not look the same for every rider.

Progress comes in different forms, just like reins come in different colors, textures, lengths, and styles.

I have learned that for horses and humans alike, the right support can make all the difference.
