The Veterans Program at HORSEPOWER Therapeutic Learning Center is designed to support veterans through equine-assisted activities. The program aims to promote mental health, provide social support, and enhance life skills among veterans transitioning to civilian life. By leveraging the therapeutic benefits of equine interaction, we seek to foster resilience, camaraderie, and personal growth within the veteran community. Veterans have been an integral part of the HORSEPOWER family since its inception as volunteers, sponsors, students and instructors. Realizing that veterans often face unique challenges, including mental health issues, social reintegration difficulties, and the stress of transitioning to civilian life, our program incorporates equine-assisted learning which has shown promising results in addressing these challenges.

Emotional Support
Provide equine assisted learning activities that address PTSD, anxiety, and depression. HORSEPOWER veteran testimony: “I wait with anticipation all week until I can come to HORSEPOWER and see my horse and participate in the class. As a veteran that deals with chronic pain from injuries, I was very reserved and spent my days inside seeking ways to alleviate the pain in my body. Since I have started with the veteran program, I have found peace, and I am more outgoing and definitely enjoying life more. My horse understands me, and we are so much alike our connection is one I feel every time we are together.”
Skill Development
Enhance life skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving through equine interaction. HORSEPOWER veteran testimony: “Being a part of the Veterans Program at HORSEPOWER has become an important part of our weekly routine. My husband’s time in the Army had a lasting effect on him as with many veterans. As a spouse there is not much you can do to lighten the heaviness they carry within them because of the experiences they had during active duty. The coaching we receive is suggestive which leaves room for failure, followed by growth through problem solving. Connecting with the horses in this way challenges us mentally, physically, and emotionally. It brings out your inner strengths. And the horses; well, they pick up on the emotions and body language which keeps us in focus as to what emotions we are projecting. There is a true sense of accomplishment at the end of every class.”

Community Building
Create a supportive environment and network fostering connections among veterans through shared experiences and activities. HORSERPOWER veteran testimony: “Since retiring I’ve had my difficulties not only with chronic pain from many injuries but also difficulties with readjusting. I’m better than I used to be, but I still struggle at times. I feel out of place, and I don’t really fit in around most people… so I tend to keep to myself. But with being a part of the Veterans Program we as veterans already share many things in common, we have so many of the same experiences, that alone has made me feel welcome in the group, and very much at ease. For me that’s a big thing.”
Physical Rehabilitation
Promote physical wellness through equine activities that improve strength, mobility and confidence. HORSEPOWER veteran testimony: “In 1969, I enlisted in the Army and served as a forward observer in Vietnam. When I left the service in 1971, I struggled to rejoin civilian society. Some 40 years later, the VA diagnosed me with PTSD. Working with horses requires patience, understanding and the ability to keep frustration from turning into anger. I originally thought that with my history with horses and as a veteran I might be a volunteer for this program. But as a participant I have gained a better understanding of horses, and more importantly, of myself. I look forward to getting to HORSEPOWER and working with the horses and it helps in both my physical and mental well-being.”

From the Ground Up: A Program Built on Connection, Confidence, and Community
Our program is intentionally designed from the ground up, because strong foundations create lasting change. Every veteran begins on the ground, creating a shared starting point that builds trust, confidence, and a meaningful partnership with the horse before ever entering the saddle.
Building Confidence One Level at a Time
Groundwork is where connection begins. Through grooming, leading, and hands-on exercises, veterans develop communication skills, horsemanship knowledge, and trust. With clear objectives and achievable goals, participants progress at their own pace, advancing only when they feel ready and have demonstrated their skills, ensuring growth without pressure.
Choose Your Path
After completing the Intermediate Ground Level, veterans may transition into the beginning riding program or continue with additional advanced ground levels for ongoing growth without riding. Specialized levels such as Catch and Release allow veterans to build confidence catching and returning horses within a herd and to assist with daily horse care. Those seeking to give back further may achieve Mentor Status, supporting and guiding new veterans entering the program.
Expert Guidance in a Healing Environment
All levels are led by experienced instructors or facilitators with strong backgrounds in horsemanship and veteran support. Sessions take place on our peaceful 53-acre farm, featuring multiple arenas and open space designed to promote learning, reflection, and calm. Veterans consistently report feeling more at ease upon arrival and look forward to their time on the farm each week.
One Big Herd
At the heart of the program is camaraderie, with veterans supporting veterans in a trusted, respectful community. Participants report improved well-being, confidence, purpose, and belonging. All services are provided at no cost, ensuring access without financial barriers.
